Top 5 eco-friendly Tahoe summer activities

Lake Tahoe Eco-Recommendations

Carrie, Founder & Chief Wanderer

f you are in Lake Tahoe during the summer months, it’s easy to make eco-friendly choices because there are so many great activities to choose from that are both good for you and the environment. Just remember while you’re having fun to respect your environment and do your part to help preserve the many natural habitats the area has to offer.

Here are Ecowander’s top five picks for summer activities in Tahoe:

1. Stand Up Paddle Board

Paddle boarding is one of my favorite ways to enjoy the lake because it allows you to explore the open waters and shores with ease. If new to paddle boarding, it can be a work out, so make sure to take some water out on the lake with you.

2. Hike the Surrounding Mountains

There are so many awesome hikes around Lake Tahoe depending on where you stay. Find a hike close to you to enjoy the aerial views of the lake and surrounding area. Some popular hikes include: Echo Peak, Eagle Lake, Five Lakes, and Glacier Meadow Loop. Just remember, stay on the trails and bring plenty of water!

If you are staying off the lake, there are plenty of public beaches to enjoy. Take a day to lounge by the water and enjoy swimming Lake Tahoe’s infamous blue waters. Beaches on the North Shore include: Kings Beach and Lake Forest Beach; South Shore beaches include: El Dorado and Zephyr Cove.

4. Canoe or Kayak

The benefits of canoeing and kayaking are similar to paddle boarding in that they give you the flexibility to maneuver across the lake and they are emissions-free. An added benefit of this mode of transportation is you can get a boat for two and enjoy the trip with a friend, which also means you can move through the water even faster!

Biking is a great environmentally friendly way to see the lake from a unique angle. The entire ride is 72 miles long and has a vertical gain/loss of over 4,000 feet— so it’s not for the faint of heart. Because it is a loop ride, you can start wherever you are and end whenever you would like – just hop on the main road. Be sure to bike along the lake side of the road, so you can enjoy the many scenic views on your ride!
